Welcome to St. Joseph

Welcome to Saint Joseph Academy! Our website represents our commitment to communicate effectively with SJA students, their families and the community at large. I hope you will find it informative, engaging and user-friendly.

St. Joseph Academy seeks to transform human society through the most effective means possible, namely through training the youth in faith, reason, and virtue. We exist in order to assist parents in educating and forming their children. To this end, we employ the best possible academic and religious instruction and maintain the highest moral standards. As with all our endeavors, we carry this out in accord with the Magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church.

Saint Joseph Academy began in 1995 as Sierra Madre Academy. Enrollment that first year was 25 students in grades one through nine. In this, our 19th year, we have an enrollment of 297 students in grades K through 12, and we are beginning our sixth year at our new campus under our new name, Saint Joseph Academy. We are a WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) accredited school that exists with the approval of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego. We are governed by a Board of Directors and guided by a Board of Advisers that includes both religious and lay leaders. Our campus houses kindergarten through twelfth grade levels. Our campus also includes administrative offices, a state-of-the-art Computer Lab, two playing fields, two full-size basketball courts and a playground. We have exciting plans for continued growth in the near future.

St. Joseph Academy utilizes a proven curriculum based on classical educational principles and proven by legitimate educational research. Our students typically score between the 85th and 99th percentile on national standardized achievement testing. As a school, our grade equivalent scores for K - 12 average nearly three grade levels above the national average. We believe our academic excellence begins in the primary grades of K-5, where we specialize in using the Spalding Phonics method. Our primary grade teachers receive formal training in this method and successfully use it to build a comprehensive foundation in the Language Arts domains of reading, writing, spelling, listening and speaking.

Our emphasis on fundamental skill acquisition and development continues throughout the middle grades. Our teachers, who love their students and their profession, use a direct approach to instruction so the student clearly understands the goal of each lesson at the beginning of the lesson. A special emphasis is placed on the Socratic Method of learning where teachers skillfully question students in order to educe or draw forth student thought, analysis and expression. A unique feature of our middle school curriculum is our Latin language program in seventh and eighth grade.

In our High School, our college preparatory curriculum is approved by the University of California and meets their entrance requirements. Our academic achievements include National Merit Scholar recognition, selection as one of the top 50 Catholic High Schools by the Catholic High School Honor Roll for three years in a row, and a 99% matriculation rate to college.

St. Joseph Academy is a unique educational environment where the Faith is the catalyst for authentic human development. Religion is taught at every grade level. The entire school attends Mass every week and once a month the traditional Latin Mass is offered. Students also have the opportunity for monthly confession and spiritual direction with a priest from Miles Christi. High school students undertake an in depth study of a different Papal encyclical each year. A peak experience in our Religious education occurs in the 12th grade where students synthesize all of their Religious instruction and participate in a rigorous apologetics program where they learn to clearly communicate the tenets of the Faith and to defend the Faith on a scriptural, theological and natural law basis. Our high school offers 2 full classes of Writing and Literature each year.  We also offer an "in-house" S.A.T. Prep class for all of our Juniors and have had exceptional positive results.  We will be starting an Internship Program this year for all of our Juniors and Senior students that will include  three consecutive days in a professional workplace doing entry-level work and job shadowing a local professional or group of professionals in a career that they are interested in learning more about. Students will be trained with the entry-level skills needed for the workplace beforehand, as well as professional dress and conduct standards.

Our athletic program includes Middle School sports in the Independent Schools League and High School sports in California Interscholastic Federation (C.I.F.). Tackle football, flag football, volleyball, basketball, soccer and track & field are included in our sports offerings. Our Crusader athletes have brought home championships and individual honors in several sports. We compete to win, but we also teach the importance of sportsmanship and character development.

We are also pleased with the development of our many clubs that help make up the extracurricular activities of the students.  Please see our listings on the website.  Each club reflects and contains aspects of our Catholic Faith that is lived out with the various activities the students are involved with.

St. Joseph Academy exists and thrives today by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. With the continued support and prayers of our SJA families and friends, we hope to remain in His favor and receive His abundant blessings day after day, year after year.

Scire, Amare, et Servire Deo: to know, love and, serve God.

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Mr. Michael Dominguez
Principal
