Dear Parents of SJA,

I have a number of important items for you today.

First of all, a big thank you to all the parents who attended our first assembly this morning and to the parents who attended our first SJPA meeting . Thank you for all your help and feedback!

Next, it looks like we need to move the date of the carnival . After we settled on the date, the sports schedules came out, and that is the date of a middle school boys and a high school girls tournament. So our new date is September 23 . Please mark your calendars and join us for this wonderful time of fun.

Did you know that our school calendar of events can be linked directly to your computer/phone /etc.?  If you would like to be added to the calendar, send me an email, titled “SJA Google Calendar” and any emails you would like to be added to the calendar. Most parents from last year are already added, so most parents already have access to it. One may also access this calendar directly on our website.

Speaking of calendar items, the TK-5 back to school night is a week from today. A schedule and a map are included. The 6-12 night is two weeks from today; more info is forthcoming.

Did you know that our student information system is called RenWeb ? Did you know that one way to access RenWeb is via the button at the bottom of our web page ? Not sure how to use RenWeb? I am attaching a document of RenWeb reminders which answers basic questions.

Remember that we are trying to reduce emails. We are posting items on our Facebook page and in our parents’ page on our website . I know there are ways to set up notifications on both Facebook and on our website so that you know whenever we post something. If anyone wants to put together a tutorial sheet on that, I will be happy to pass it on to everyone.

I am also attaching some common mistakes regarding our dress code , just for fun.

Finally, I want to encourage you to attend the Miles Christi Gala on Saturday the 16th .  For one, it is good to support the work of the priests of the order. One of those priests, Father Patrick, comes every Wednesday to give spiritual direction to our 8-12 grade students.  And two, their keynote speaker is an old graduate school friend of mine, Curtis Martin . He is the founder of FOCUS , which sends young missionaries to many college campuses around the country in an effort to keep Catholic students Catholic. Also, one of their young missionaries is an old student of mine. She graduated from Harvard the spring of 2016 and was the captain of their basketball team; last year and this year she is a missionary at USC.  I am sure his talk with be worth hearing.

Thank you for partnering with us in the education of your children,

Tony Biese, Headmaster

Dear Parents of SJA,

I found out this morning that one of our families is friends with a family from TX. They are in town and are leaving tomorrow afternoon to bring three trucks and two trailers of supplies to help the victims of the flooding.

What we can do: we will be collecting basic supplies today and tomorrow morning such as canned food, bedding, toiletries, hygiene products, clothing and shoes . Please also keep them in your prayers .

God bless,

Tony Biese, Headmaster

Our school community is built on prayer.  I invite all the parents to join us in prayer as we go through our day.
The student body prays at the beginning of the school day, before their lunch time, and at the end of the school day.   The exact times are listed on the prayer sheet so that you can time your prayer to coincide with your children's prayers.  Please join us in prayer and hold up your child and all the school community in prayer.

God bless!

Dear Parents of SJA,

We had a great start to the school year today! Although it was so warm, the children’s smiling, happy faces were a joy to see. I pray that each and every student had a good start to the year. Remember to please feel free to set up a meeting with me anytime; the office can schedule you on my calendar.

I have a couple quick notes:

Carpool numbers are the same as last year (if you need more, let the office know)

The High School ASB is hosting a breakfast sale on Thursday .

I hope for this to be one of my last general emails ; instead you will read letters like this by regularly visiting the parent page on the website or by becoming a member of our SJA Facebook news site. About half of our families are now Facebook members.

God bless!

Dear SJA Parents,

As I start to use Facebook and explore how we can use it to better communicate, it seems we need another private parents’ group.

In the last day, some parents have wanted to post such things as meal calendars, uniform items available, etc. We definitely need a place to post such things and communicate as parents, but doing it on the main page may prove to be too much information.

So the current plan is to keep the primary parents’ page for SJA news and events and the other private parents’ page for communicating with other parents.

Thank you!

Dear Parents of SJA,

Two weeks ago I sent an update of what is new here at SJA. There are some more new items I want to tell you about, and I want to remind you of a few items I mentioned last time.

First, the new items :

As many of you already know, we have a new high school head football coach, Kareem Williams . What is new is that he will also be teaching our p.e. and supervising the children during lunch/recess. His bio is below.

As I had emailed yesterday, we have a new before and after school care program. Directing this new program is one of our parents, Jessica Rodriguez . Jessica will also be providing afternoon care to the TK. Her bio is below. The monthly activity schedule for after school care is also attached.

Tonight at 7:00 is the kick-off of the high school football season ! Our first game is a home game at the beautiful Connors Park in San Marcos at 320 W. San Marcos Blvd.   We were league champions last year; this summer we had the best record in the summer passing league, and we won all three of the scrimmage games played last week! Come out and support the team and enjoy time with the families on the sideline. Come early to tailgate and visit our concession stand which will be selling hotdogs and hamburgers, etc. This is a great way to start the school year.

Reminders :

Sign up for our new private Facebook parent page . Want to know what is going on, become a member of the page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1393383394111484/ . Currently, there are 66 members of the group. To all members, thank you and please encourage your other SJA Facebook friends to join the group, too.

Most of the information posted on Facebook will also be on our new website ( http://www.saintjosephacademy.org/ ), for those who want to access this info without a Facebook account. Go to the parents’ page and log in (password:hailmary).

The high school orientation is this Monday, and the first day of school is Tuesday . If I don’t see you tonight at the game (which is going to be awesome), I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday for the beginning of a terrific year!

God bless,

Tony Biese, Headmaster

Kareem Williams - Coach Williams is a husband and father of five kids. He started playing football at the pop warner level when he was six years old. In high school, he played for Oceanside High School under Coach John Carroll. He was a three year varsity starter at middle linebacker and full back. During his sophomore year, his team won the CIF championship in the highest division. Coach Williams began coaching his son in pop warner and remained coaching for 14 seasons with Oceanside and San Marcos Popwarner. For the past five years, he has coached at San Marcos High School on both the varsity and freshman level.

Four years ago, he started Energy Athletes Performance Group , which is a local company that trains athletes from 2nd grade up to college in nearly every sport. Also, some athletes from his training company participate in High School 7 on 7 football leagues and tournaments throughout the year. They are currently ranked in the top 15th percentile for the West Coast and were ranked the #1 team in San Diego last year. For more information on Energy Athletes visit http://www.energyathletes.com/home.html

Coach Williams also has extensive experience and training in security, having worked for the security company, Island Roots.

Philosophy- “I coach the game because I love it. Football is a sport that can enable young men to both discover and express their deepest self. It is a sport that can build a strong character for a young man. It is a tool where you can teach valuable lessons to young men not just about the sport of football but about life.”

“I believe with my coaching and training experience I can bring a positive and fun atmosphere to the PE program here at St Joseph.  I can’t wait to get started.”

Hello Saint Joseph Academy,

My name is Jessica Rodriguez, and I am a mother of three St. Joseph Academy students: Elijah (7), Cassidy (4) and new this year, Carissa (K).  My husband Eric and I are thankful to God for SJA and the entire school community.  I am blessed to be joining SJA’s staff this year, and I look forward to serving you and your children.

I studied early childhood development and was a preschool teacher/director for an AM/PM care program for 3 years. This year I am the TK afternoon-care teacher and A.M./P.M. Program Director.

I believe in training up children in the way they should go, and when they are older they will not depart from it (Prov. 22.6). I’m thankful to share my time, talents and love of teaching with SJA.

God knows the plans He has for us.

In God's love & light,

Jessica Rodriguez

I am excited to say that we are expecting almost 100 parents and staff tonight!  I look forward to seeing all who can make it in a few hours at the Lakehouse San Marcos at 1025 La Bonita Drive in San Marcos.  The event is from 5-10 P.M.   See you soon!

Dear Parents of SJA,

I pray your summer is going well and that it has been a time of refreshment and rejuvenation for you and your family.

What is new at SJA?

Four-year old Kindergarten – TK! We are excited to be launching our transitional kindergarten program and to be welcoming four year olds to the campus. The program runs daily in the morning, and in the afternoon we have an aftercare program. We have more spaces available; please spread the word.

International Students!   We will welcome our first international student from Mexico into the high school, and this winter, we are planning on welcoming a contingent of Chinese students for a short visit.

New Website!   We have built a new website which is better suited to effective keyword searches, more easily navigated, redesigned with a simplified design and has a password protected parent page . The website address is the same, and the password for the parent page is “hailmary.” Go here to access it: http://www.saintjosephacademy.org/parents .

No more emails!   Well, actually we will still email, but my goal is to drastically reduce the number we send you. Instead, pertinent information will be posted on the parent page of the new website. Just visit the page regularly to find out all you need to know.

Facebook!   Don’t want to visit the webpage regularly? Facebook user?   No worries! The information posted on the password-protected parent page will also be posted to the new private SJA parent page . Just join our private group and all you need to know will show up in your Facebook newsfeed! To join, go to the following link and request to join: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1393383394111484/ .

No more St. Joseph Messenger!   Instead of waiting to gather a week or so of information and emailing it at the end of the weekend, now we will post each item as soon as we gather it to make it easier to stay up with all the latest info.

New Public Facebook page!   We have re-built our public Facebook page and have begun running Facebook ads to better communicate the benefits of SJA to the wider community. Go here to view it: https://www.facebook.com/Saint-Joseph-Academy-114569479171963/ .

New Videos!   We have released our first video about SJA, and more will follow in the fall months. I am looking for enthusiastic parents who are willing to be in our upcoming videos. Let me know if you are interested.

New Teachers! In addition to our new fifth grade teacher, Damian Sagastume, who I introduced months ago, we have a new TK teacher and a new religion/math high school teacher. Although we no longer have Miss Fredrickson or Miss Pluth with us, we are very pleased to welcome Miss Grimm and Miss Mayock to the faculty.

New Roles!   Mr. Hanson will be shifting some of his duties; instead of teaching p.e. to grades 1 and up, he will be the second teacher in the 5th grade for some of his classes.

New Students and Families! We are very pleased to welcome over 20 new families and over 40 new students to the SJA family.   When you see these new faces among us, please give them a warm SJA welcome!

New Grass!   An artificial grass company in Escondido, Purchase Green , is donating the grass and installing it for us in our courtyard. We are expecting the project to be completed by the end of next week, in time for the beginning of the new school year! Thank you, Purchase Green !

New After-School Program!   Not only are we creating a new program with a calendar of different daily activities, we will have new prepayment options available as well. All the details coming soon.

More news to come soon.

Note: Regarding the improvements we are making with communication, Facebook and the new website, it is a work in progress . Even today, there are changes happening on our new website and items we are fixing and will be fixing in the next week. In a week from now, if you are still seeing issues on the website, please let me know. As we seek to communicate more effectively and in a manner more in line with how you want to receive communication, we will be experimenting and looking for your feedback .

Damian Sagastume . “I am a father of four who has been teaching for six years, one year at a public school in Salinas, CA, and five at a Classical Catholic School in Albuquerque, NM. I earned a B.A. in Theatre Arts at Sonoma State and a teaching credential at Chico State, my beloved hometown. Before becoming a teacher, I was an after school leader, reading tutor, birthday party coordinator, special education assistant, group home counselor, nursing home aide, teacher's assistant, abstinence educator, landscape worker, library assistant, camp counselor, grocery store checker, professional soccer team mascot, and a music store employee, all of which have been the source of one or two amusing anecdotes that I keep in reserve for when I attend cocktail parties.

“I love my Church. I love my kids. I love my wife. I love books. I love theatre. I look forward to teaching and working with your children at St. Joseph Academy.”

Miss Grimm was born and raised in Southern California and is delighted to be moving to a wonderful school so close to the beautiful Pacific.  Homeschooled through 8th Grade, she attended St. Monica Academy for high school and received her Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts from Thomas Aquinas College.  Since her graduation in 2013 she has worked as an administrative assistant for a conservative political action group, a house assistant in a senior residence run by the Carmelite sisters of Santa Teresita, and a teacher at St. Therese Carmelite School.  Her duties varied in her time at St. Therese.  Primarily, Miss Grimm served as the Pre-K/K teacher where she implemented a classical curriculum that included Montessori influences. When she wasn’t the Pre-K/K teacher, she also taught level one of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, 8th grade math, 2nd grade religion, and she was the schoolwide aide and substitute teacher.

Her hobbies include dancing, singing, cooking, camping, reading, volleyball, and basketball. She has been a member of multiple choral groups including Pasadena Pro Musica, and she is active in her local Y.A. ministry, particularly its mission to promote the culture of life. As the eldest of 11, she loves working with children and bringing them closer to God through prayer, work, and play!

Hello! My name is Maura Mayock, and I’m thrilled to be joining the staff at St Joseph Academy this year.  I grew up in a small town in beautiful Washington State where my family and I spent lots of time outside – playing soccer, hiking, and visiting national parks.  I loved reading and science, and I (secretly) wanted to be a missionary in a foreign country.  Faith wasn’t a big part of my family life back then, but in high school God really touched me.   When I went to college I began attending Mass regularly.  As a freshman and sophomore, I attended school here in California-- at Caltech in Pasadena.  Pretty soon I found an amazing Christian community that really moved me with their genuine desire to live the gospel and follow Jesus.

I ended up transferring back up to Washington to finish my degree at Western Washington University.  I majored in Geophysics and then spent a year working for the Newman Catholic Campus Ministry at the school.  At that point, I entered a religious community of nuns and stayed for about half a year. Upon leaving, I decided to study Biblical Theology to serve the Church more effectively, and I moved to Escondido last year to start a Master’s degree at John Paul the Great Catholic University.  After years tutoring and teaching in non-school environments, I am excited to become a part of St Joseph Academy’s mission for excellent Catholic education.
